Modern Jane Home Tour

I hope you have been enjoying this series because I have another amazing home tour for you!
Today we have Jane from Modern Jane.
This home tour screams cozy and inviting yet it is packed full of personality.
It is a gem I tell ya.
My name is Jane, also know as Modern Jane by my friends in the blog world. I live in Prince Edward Island, Canada with my fiance and our little Boston Terrier, Beaufort. I am an elementary school teacher by day and a wannabe interior designer by night.

I bought my first home 5 years ago and started my blog Modern Jane shortly after to document its transformation from dark and dated to light and bright! Blogging opened my world up a huge
network of people who shared my interest in decorating and design. These people inspired me to take risks and helped shape my own personal style. The whole process made me realize that interior design was not just a passing interest but something I was truly passionate about.

People often ask me how I would define my style and I have trouble pinpointing it. I sometimes refer to it as fresh cottage modern. I love the crisp and fresh feel of white walls and furnishings but with pops of color and a variety of textures that add warmth and softness to the space. My own home is definitely transitional with a good mix of vintage pieces and modern elements.

I definitely love decorating with white. While I love color, I find white to be anything but boring. Paired with shades of soft blues and greys, creates such a serene space. Lately, I’m into black and white; stripes, dots, floral, you name it. It’s such a timeless classic.

Dans Le Townhouse Home Tour

Today we have Tanya from Dans Le Townhouse
Her use of modern furniture and bold colors is refreshing.

I share my home with my Handy Hubby and a Komondor puppy named Szuka (“Sooka”), who is only five months old but already tall enough to knock a pound of butter off the kitchen counter with her nose.  Ask me how I know this.  I’m in the final leg of completing my PhD and we’ll soon be moving 1500 km from our city townhouse to a rural lakefront bungalow.

I knew I liked design when I was in elementary school.  I had stolen a very 80s, very frilly, design magazine from my mother and hid it under my bed.  I used to pour over it and try to emulate the designs.  I’d push together kitchen chairs, wrapped in a blanket and packing tape, to make a “sofa,” and would re-arrange my rock collection on the daily.  I never stopped ferreting away design magazines, and making the most of what I have.

I think I’m still finding my style, which I hope never stops evolving, but I do tend to favor simplicity with some personality.  I like uncluttered spaces with bold art and vintage accessories.  I’m also a sucker for anything handmade and I’m passionate about art.  I’m editing our things for the move right now, selling what won’t work and picking up a few pieces that will.  I’m finding myself gravitating to fewer, but bolder, furniture pieces, art and accessories.

Looking at the townhouse, you wouldn’t guess my favorite colour is turquoise!  I love watery hues and am working toward redirecting my colour palette toward blue, turquoise, teal, and green – grounded by grey and white – in the lakehouse.  I used to use my favorite colour – turquoise – sparingly for some reason, but moving forward I’m using it in bold ways: we’re painting our kitchen cabinets turquoise and I just had a vintage chair we found in the trash re-upholstered a gorgeous shade of teal velvet.

Tanya is in the process of renovating a new home, and the before and afters are already so good!

The power of paint is amazing.
I am loving the dark fireplace!

Since Tanya’s new home is a work in progress, she agreed to share with us her townhome. I just love how fresh and clean it is!

Cuckoo 4 Design Home Tour!

Next up we have Julia from Cuckoo 4 Design
Her blog and home is one of my favorites!
I’m Julia from Cuckoo4Design. I’m a German citizen married to an American and living in the US. We have two beautiful children. An 11 year old boy and a 7 year old firecracker for a daughter.
The name for my blog originated from the fact that some people call me the crazy German.
You can read more about my story and where I am from here.
Design and art are truly my passion. I’ve known this since an early age. I enrolled in art school in Germany as a late teenager because I loved anything that had to do with creating! I then worked in visual merchandising at one of the largest furniture stores in Germany which really was my favorite job ever. I got to design rooms and displays all day (just like the Ikea layout) without having to sell anything. At that store I got to learn from the in-house carpenters, coworkers, painters and wallpaper professionals. I hate wallpapering by the way, not my favorite thing at all.
In the US I went to school for Graphic Design and worked in the field for a short while but it definitely never compared to the hands on experience that I loved so much at my last job.

My style is eclectic or as I call it multi-personality decor. I just like so many different things from antiques, to modern and ethnic. I feel like I don’t have to or want to make up my mind. That’s how I am with music too, it always depends in what kind of mood I am in.

I would have to say that I have always loved to use black and white. It started with an obsession of black and white checkerboard floors as a teenager. I feel like I can’t ever grow tired of it and there are so many different ways of using this timeless color combo. I used a lot of it recently in my Halloween house decor and I want to use more of it for Christmas again.

Elliven Studio Home Tour

Last week was a doozy. I had an unexpected flair up with 3 kidney stones.
Man those are so painful!
Luckily, today I am heading to Mexico for a family vacation. It is a much need break after last weeks events.
While I am gone, I have a treat for you. I will be sharing a few of my favorite home tours!
I am so honored that these ladies are sharing their home tours with us. I know you will enjoy them!
Today we are going to take a peek inside of Julie’s, from Elliven Studio, beautiful home!
Her home is so chic and the details are perfection.

Hello!  My name is Julie. I’m a Stay At Home Mum to three young boys, an air force wife (married to my high school sweetheart), we have a 10 year old boxer and we are currently living in Ontario, Canada!  I absolutely love to run, love coffee and love music.

I’ve always had a love for interior design, ever since I was  young, but for whatever reason I never thought of pursuing it as a career.  When I think back, I can’t believe I never realized how much of a perfect fit that career path would have been for me!  A few years ago, I really got in to sewing bags (gorgeous fabric gives me goosebumps, seriously, I love it!) and decided to start a blog to chronicle my creations.  From there, I joined twitter, instagram and other social media outlets which enabled me to interact and connect with interior designers.  My blog slowly went from being all about crafting and sewing to being all about interior design and I quickly realized that interior design or decorating was something that I had to pursue. It was a pretty unconventional way to get into design, but I couldn’t be any happier with how it’s all worked out and wouldn’t change a thing.  The timing is perfect now that all three kids are in school and I have time to devote to it.

I don’t really know if I have a specific style, I honestly love them all! I think I could say that my style is a bit eclectic traditional perhaps. I often fall head over heels for rooms that have a touch of french style to them and I love combining vintage and antique finds with new pieces.  There isn’t anything better than finding a vintage piece of furniture and being able to give it new life with a touch of spray paint or new fabric.  I love rooms that have stories to them.

I often use the colour grey, which sounds so bland, but I honestly love it!  It’s been my go to for years.  That being said, I can’t seem to get enough of various shades blue and purple right now, which is funny because I’ve never been much of fan of either up until now.  I guess I could go with blue as my current favourite colour for decorating.  It’s soothing & welcoming at the same time and I love that.
