DIY Abstract Art Tutorial

I finally finished my first DIY for my new little home.
A little abstract art for my entry!
It wasn’t easy. Actually is was SO much harder than I ever imagined. Who knew throwing a little paint onto a canvas would prove to be so difficult?! I now have so much more respect for artists, it is a talent that I wish I possessed!
My art piece did not turn out like I envisioned. It is far from perfect and done without proper technique, but I kinda like it.
It adds a little color and life to my entry, exactly what it needed.
This is actually the same canvas I painted my DIY ombre art on.
I just re-painted the canvas white and started over…which made this project cost very little.

I am happy with the color scheme, it’s packed full of all of my favorite colors.

It still needs to be hung, but its large scale is perfect for between the windows.

Now I need to find the perfect fabric for the bench!

For those who are interested, here are the paints that I used.
They are acrylic and I bought them at Walmart for 55 cents each.
It cost me under $8.00 for all of them.
I also included a quick little picture tutorial.
I had NO idea what I was doing, but here are the steps I took to create my abstract art.
The end steps are a little tricky to follow, but if you look closely you should be able to get the general idea.
Although this project seemed overwhelming at first, I am really happy I finally did it!
I also can’t complain about a huge piece of art for $8.00!

Thrifty Tuesday: Affordable Florals!

Have you been to World Market lately?
They have some really great stuff, especially their drapery.
Finding floral fabrics can be tricky, so I always get excited when I find some that are affordable!
I love this parrot one, the colors are killer.
Unfortunately it only comes in 84″ length. Why do they make drapery panels 84″ anyways? They are too short for any window!
But, it would make some killer pillows or a great upholstered headboard.
And for $34.99, you can’t go wrong.

This one would also make some great pillows.
Pair it with some geometric prints and it would be so good.

Let’s talk about the pop of coral in this one?

So pretty.

This shower curtain is packed full of pretty colors.
The aqua background is stunning with the coral and purple.

I am not usually a green fan, but I must admit, I love this green and purple combo.

Now I just need to think of the perfect project to use one of these beauties.
I’m thinking my master bedroom!

DIY Headboard Video Tutorial!

My girl Jen over at WithHeart just launched her youtube channel where she will be featuring videos of all sorts of wonderful DIY’s, tutorials, inspiring stories, interviews, a little of everything really.

I was lucky enough to be one of her firsts guest on her new adventure and helped Jen make a headboard for her master bedroom!

It’s so strange to be in front of the camera when I am used to hiding behind my keyboard. I actually had a ton of fun, maybe I will start adding a little video action around here once in a while?!

Side note: I can still hear a little Canadian accent in my voice…woot woot! Ten years later and it’s still holding strong. That Canadian blood is thick stuff I tell ya.

So, what do you think? Ready to tackle a headboard now?

Also, you can head on over to WithHeart for a full written and picture tutorial since listening to my voice on repeat might get a little old.

Thanks for having me Jen.

Time for Drapery: Let’s Vote!

I am ready to tackle my first project in my living room…adding drapery!
We have been experiencing record temperature highs here in Boise and my AC unit is working overtime to keep things cool in here.
Although I LOVE the big windows and all the light they provide, adding some drapery will help keep the room a little cooler and hopefully save me a few dollars on my AC bill.
Things to consider…
The blue rug has to go. It is just way too small for the space and looks silly.
Also, I want to keep the drapery simple since I am hoping to do something fun (maybe wallpaper?) on the television wall.
I have narrowed it down to 2 options, I already think I know the direction I want to head, but it is fun to hear your opinon.
So, let’s vote!
1. White drapery with black trim (rod color still undecided).

{My photoshop skills are lacking, so you will need to use your imagination a little…}
2. Plain white drapery (thinking a gold rod).
Ok, let’s hear it!
What is your vote?
