I have finally made some progress on my master bedroom.
I still have lots of projects on my to-do list, but things are starting to slowly come together.
My budget is very small, so DIY projects are a must!
I am super excited about my DIY spotted headboard, I really think it turned out great!
I purchased the dalmation fabric from Tonic Living. It is only $11.95/yard which is such a great price. Tonic Living is my go-to online store for affordable fabric. They also just happen to be a Canadian based company (woot woot) but ship to the US daily!
This fabric is perfect for a headboard since the pattern can be placed in either direction. I only needed 1.5 yards (for a queen) which made it super affordable too.
I love how simple, crisp, and full of personality this fabric is!
Plus, I can never say no to black & white.
The pillows were a labor of love too. I’ll share more about them next week!
If you follow me on Instagram, I’ve been sharing updates as I go along.
So far I have spent just under $225.00 which includes my nightstands, headboard, pillows, and accessories! Not bad right?
I kept things super simple in regards to making the headboard. For a queen you need:
1.5 yards of fabric
3 yards of batting (use coupon at JoAnn’s)
4 x 8 sheet of plywood (cut to size at Home Depot)
Staples & Staple gun
Step 1: Wrap batting (2 layers) & staple.
Step 2: Lay out fabric.
Step 3: Staple fabric (I start from the middle and work my way out).
Super simple & inexpensive!
Tonic Living is kindly offering 10% off to all my readers! Use the coupon code DANIELLE10 at check-out to activate the discount!
So what do you think? Do you like my new look?

That is crazy for $28!! My favorite is that you can change those pillows out on whim and it will coordinate with anything! (Not that you’d do that) 🙂

Yes! I love how versatile it is!

Do you hang the headboard on the wall or attach it to the bed?
I’m a fellow renter and would love to make a headboard, but I worry about damaging the wall with hanging something heavy like a headboard.
Danielle Oakey Interiors says
Actually, I don’t attach the headboard at all! I just rest in on the box spring, lean it up against the wall, and hold it into place with the mattress. I’ve done with for years with no trouble!
Sam Walker says
This was something I was wondering too – I’ve never thought of just leaning it before! Thanks for the tip – definitely going to try this now.
Allie says
IN LOVE! Just what I need to do for my guest room because I am also on a LOW budget! Thanks for sharing!! How did you hang it?
Danielle Oakey Interiors says
Thank you! I know the low budget feeling! Luckily, there are so many affordable options out there.

It looks fantastic Danielle! I love the dalmation fabric. I’m thinking of ordering some for a tablecloth. Your pillows are wonderful! You will have to share your sewing technique. They look so professional. I need to try to make a pillow. Your bedroom is beautiful!

Thank you!!!

I LOVE what you did! How’s the headboard up so high? Did you hang it to the wall? I used togo in my guest bedroom for my curtains and could not love it more. It’s got that wow factor without being so over the top.
Danielle Oakey Interiors says
No, I just rested it on the boxspring!

Love your master bedroom. You make white walls seem easy to decorate and so desirable. We too just moved. We have white walls and are not allowed to paint them. You put some pillow combos together a while back from tonic living. I am using your combos and the Dalmatian dot fabric is part it. I just made my first purchase at tonic living. So excited. When I get the pillows made I will send you a picture. Love your blog. It inspires me to create and gives me many things to replicate.
Anee Shah says
Love the room and the fabric selection!!
Thank you for the inspiration Danielle! I recreated the headboard. Turned out great! 🙂

Love everything about this room! Do you happen to remember the thickness of the plywood you used for the headboard? I would like to get one that’s not so thick, but also doesn’t bend.
