Today I am going to keep things simple.
One of the questions I get asked the most is “What height should I hang a picture?”
This is also one of the first things I notice when working with design clients, hanging pictures too high is common.
Obviously it is not an exact science, but I like typcially tell my clients to hang the center of their pictures between 56″- 58″ off the floor, regardless of the ceiling height.
If you have a single row of pictures, simply center the picture 56″- 58″ off the floor.
If you are working with a grouping, hang the center of the grouping 56″ – 58″ off the floor.
And you can even get away with hanging pictures all the way to the ceiling as long as they are eveloped in a gallery wall.
If you happen to have your pictures hung to high, the good news is…it is an easy fix!
I know we have talked about how to hang curtains before, but I always get a lot questions regarding the exact placement of the rod. I think I’ll tackle that next.
Do you have any design questions you would like answered?
xo,

I need guidance in picking kitchen lighting. I know the kind of light fixtures I like, but I’m not sure how to mix and match in my space. I need (pendant) lighting above my table, sink, and island. My ceilings are very high so I don’t know if it will look weird to have so much hanging down.

Awesome question. I’ll work on a post on this topic!

Such a good post!! I seriously am always way guilty of hanging artwork too low and i don’t notice until my husband who is much taller than me is standing next to it and i realize my house probably looks like hobbits live there! Love you and your blog!

This was so helpful! My husband hangs a lot of our pictures, and he is 6′ 3″ and usually hangs things at his eyesight. So I walk by the mirrors and can only see the top of my head. 🙂
Questions I’d love to hear your input on:
1) Our kitchen/eating/family room area is one big open room. The cabinets and built in shelves (for the TV) are all dark brown. But the molding/doors are white. I want to paint my kitchen cabinets white. If I do this, would you recommend I paint the TV built-ins (at the opposite end of the room) white as well?
Danielle Oakey Interiors says
No, I don’t think you have to paint them white. They could easily stay dark brown or you could even paint them another color (like maybe a grey) to act as a “custom piece”. With that being said, it wouldn’t be bad thing to paint them white either. If you want a simple more unified look, then I would stick with painting them white. Your options are really endless. Hope this helps!

Does the same apply for mirrors? Love your blog btw!
Danielle Oakey Interiors says
Pretty much. Obviously accent mirrors (that aren’t meant to be looked in) can really be hung at any level (especially if in a gallery wall), but the center of a functional mirror should be hung around 5′-0″. Does this help?

Pet peeve is pictures too high! So funny story- my über short friend (who wants absolutely nothing to do with decor) let’s her 6’11 husband hang everything. It’s literally at the ceiling. When I commented once I couldn’t see their new family photo, she said he read it should be hung at eye level. I almost died laughing.

This is so helpful for everyone looking to hang art Danielle!

Oh! Oh! I thought of some other questions:
– Who are your favorite designers – who inspires you?
– What are your favorite design blogs or design books and or magazines?
– When designing a room, where is the best place to start?
– When designing a space, where is the best place so splurge (i.e., furniture), and where should one look for bargains (i.e., lamps or artwork)?
– Favorite solutions for windows: should curtains be hung with shutters for example?
Ok, I promise I’m not stalking you! I really love your blog, and you’ve provided me with lots of wonderful inspiration!
Leaving your comment section alone now. 🙂

Hi Danielle,
First of all, I love your blog and specially your style! You have inspire most of my decorating ideas.
I’ve been thinking of good questions to ask, and although I am not sure this qualifies as one, I will still ask it =D
How would you create a gallery wall around a mirror? Our entry living room walls need treatment, and I think a mirror would work our great. One of the walls has a big window and the other one has the stairs and a coat closet, so that leaves me with two empty walls.
Also, how do you feel about family pictures, I don’t hate it but I also don’t love it, what would be you take on that?
I wish you were still in SLC, but for now this will do! Thanks for providing this space to ask silly questions. =)
