My living room rug has seen better days.
It has served us well over the last few years, but it needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately, rugs are so expensive and there is a big possibility that we will be moving for Intern year next June, making me not want to invest too much in a new one.
I know painted rugs have been around for a while, but I have seen a few inspiring ones lately.
I absolutely love Sarah’s, from Sarah M. Dorsey Designs, Moroccan painted rug.
It sure does look amazing, and can you beat $60.00?

I also love this geometric painted rug featured on Design Sponge.

The coral is stunning!
Do you think this is a DIY worthy project?
Or would you spend the money on a “real” rug?
gorgeous! i have been meaning to try this, but i haven’t gotten around to it yet!
I’d look for a cheap “real” rug. The pictures of these DIY rugs always look nice, but I don’t imagine they’re very cozy in real life and the effort just doesn’t seem worth it.
I our house, with a dog, 2 kids and a husband who’s incapable of kicking off his shoes at the door, I kind of consider area rugs (at least in the living room) to be a disposable item.
I’ve never paid more than $150 for a rug, and our living room requires at least an 8×10′. It takes some research and some hunting, but there are deals to be had.
OMG, it looks amazing! I am always scared to do this like that, especially because you need ply wood and things like that.
Great share!
there are so many great resources for inexpensive real rugs now, and even though you will be moving, since rugs come in standard sizes, you will be able to use it in thenext house! I think of them as investments. My living room rug (purchased with amex points from pottery barn, and on sale, too) has now been in the living room in three different homes. I have rugs that I bough a dozen years ago that are still in use. It’s worth the money!
While a DIY painted rug might look nice on a blog, I bet in real life it will not feel great under your feet and the paint job will not hold up in the long run.
I’m about to try my hand at painting a cheapie ikea flat weave. I figure I can’t make it worse! 🙂
i love those! i think its brilliant. i dont think i could do it because id be too much of a nazi over straight lines that it might be the death of me. i love love love it tho, and id like someone to come do it FOR me
I love Sarah’s rug too. I think its certainly worth a try – especially at only $60. You’d do a bang up job I know!
I love her rug too, but personally I would wait and purchase one from Rugs USA during one of their 75% off sales! They have some great options!

I already have a really beautiful Moroccan kilim which is unfortunately really stained now. I’ve been thinking about overdying it, rather than getting a new one. Just have to try to work out the best way now!! :S Good luck with your painting project – all the ones I’ve seen have turned out fab! xx

I have had this same internal discussion! I’m not sure either – I think it depends on where it will go. I’m going to put one together for my sun room, but it won’t be used much and is outdoor. I think for a high-traffic area or somewhere you want comfort, I’d get a ‘real rug’, but for dining room (under tables) or indoor/outdoor or foyer, it is a fun way to add something custom.

The rug indeed looks stunning. I especially liked the blue and white combination. But you know, white can be a bit difficult to maintain. If you ever experience any problem regarding cleaning just click here. They provide excellent service.
Wow! Amazing that you couldn’t even tell those rugs are painted!
