On Thursday I am heading to Calgary to help my sister with her DIY kitchen renovation.
She bought her house about 3 years ago and hasn’t had a chance to touch the kitchen yet.
It is spec home built with standard finishes, nothing is super fancy!
Her kitchen is crying for some personality, contrast, and interest.
The Plan:
– Paint the upper cabinets white and the lower cabinets grey.
-Add trim and baseboards to the island
-Add crown molding to the top of cabinets
-Add subway tile backsplash
-Add a pantry door
Since they are trying to keep this makeover under $500.00 they are doing all the work themselves.
They have already started adding the trim and baseboards to the island.
How great does that look already?
Thanks to blogs, I am regularly inspired by DIY kitchen makeovers.
Holly’s kitchen is one of my favorite makeovers, the before and afters blow my mind.
Of course I am a big fan of white cabinets, especially with those yummy grey walls.

And who doesn’t just adore The Lettered Cottage’s kitchen makeover?!
We definitely used this kitchen makeover as inspiration for my sisters.
Notice the white uppers and grey lowers?
Oh, and the addition of the crown molding?

When we first moved into our condo, I painted all my kitchen cabinets.
It sure is a lot of work, but is so worth it!
Have you ever tried painting your own cabinets?
Oh I can’t WAIT to see this- both of your inspiration kitchens blow my mind and $500…soooo impressive!
those before and afters are amazing! can’t wait to see what y’all do in your sister’s home!
The first thing we did after moving to our first home 3 years ago was paint our 80’s oak kitchen cabinets white. Best decision I ever made. Can’t wait to see what you do!
The Lettered Cottage Kitchen is incredible! I love the fresh white and grey against the dark chalkboard wall. Can’t wait to see how your sister’s turns out!
I’m really looking forward to the big reveal! I have been wanting to do white uppers with gray lowers for a few years. My hubby can now see it instead of visualizing it! Have fun with your sister!
I can only imagine how amazing this transformation is going to be!! I love the Lettered Cottage. What a great inspiration kitchen! Good luck and looking forward to seeing the results!!
We repainted our cabinet (kitchen included), well, the Hubs did, I just watched, LOL! I am temped this year when we head down to paint the lowers a fun bright color…we will see. Here is a link, love the transformation!

BTW, if you have time drop me a line, I am sure you are going to be crazy busy but I am going to be showing Courtney from Courtney Out Loud around the job sites and the city all weekend. 🙂
Oh my gosh I can’t wait to see what you do!! It’s going to look amazing…and Chelsea’s going to be so lucky with a beautiful new (looking) kitchen!
Yes! In our very first condo we painted our brown oak cabinets, white. Such a huge transformation. So much work and so worth it. Those kitchens are so beautiful.
What happy timing for this post – I am knee deep in a DIY kitchen update myself. I have to chuckle at the similarities of our plans: white upper cabinets; grey lower cabinets; and crown molding trim on the uppers (though our trim was already in the kitchen and I had to convince my husband to keep it). I also have a laminate countertop and backsplash to update which I hope to accomplish with paint for the short term. I can’t wait to see your sister’s kitchen after all the updates!

I love a good DIY kitchen. Have you seen Chris’ on Just Beachy blog? That one blows my mind.
We painted our cabinets in our first house black back around 2005. We loved them!
I love a good budget challenge! And the two tone cabinets will be ultra fab! Can’t wait to see it.
We painted the cabinets white in our last house and plan to in this one!
That is going to be so fun! I wish I had the confidence to paint my own cabinets in my last house, but we ended up hiring it out! It is amazing what can be accomplished with a little elbow grease, though. Can’t wait to see the completed makeover!
I really wanna go ahead and paint the cabinets on this place anyways. Anybody who puts up with Calgary weather deserves a really nice kitchen. In an ideal dream world of course.
The kitchen you featured looks amazing and I am sure that your sister’s kitchen will look amazing as well. White and grey sounds great for the cabinets. Can’t wait to see how it will look.
oh im dying to see the result. LOVE the sound of that palette, and the killer is those cabinets she has will be perfect once painted… they dont have anything too distinct and look like they are in great shape!
Love a white kitchen! I will definitely be painting some 80’s style wood cabinets soon if our offer on a condo gets accepted! I may have to do the grey lowers now 🙂
These are all perfect inspiration! There is really nothing a coat of white paint can’t fix in an ugly kitchen – I’ve experienced the miracle of paint in my kitchen 🙂 xx

We remodeled our kitchen last year too…we gutted the old kitchen, put in used oak cabinets (from Craigslist) and painted them and added custom moldings at top and bottom….

I tried painting my cabinets and they looked so horrible. I don’t think I sanded them down enough or something but I ended up having to call a painter who specialized in kitchen remodeling Tempe AZ. He cost more than I wanted to spend but he fixed my horrible diy. I admire all these pictures and all the women behind them.
That seriously is one of the nicest makeovers ever! I am so impressed with your vision . It is just gorgeous!Lees Kitchen Makeovers Ltd at Manchester will provide you best family based kitchen design.
