I finally did it, I started painting my faux bamboo chairs!
You can read all about my lucky find here.
This project has been on my mind forever but I have been hesitant to start because I wasn’t confident in my direction.
I decided to paint them white, kinda boring I know but I want to keep them versatile.
I am using Rustoleums oil based high gloss paint, like I did with my desk.
I love the sheen and durability of the paint.
I was hoping they would only need one coat.
Man, that was a silly thought, I think they will need three, boo!
All of those spindles are killing me, it was at this point in the project that I contemplated throwing the chair off the balcony.
Such.a.pain.
I pushed through the torture and got one coat done.
Since the paint requires 24 hours of drying time in-between coats, I haven’t had the chance (or found the motivation) to slap on the second coat.
Did I mention I have 4 of these chairs?
Although it is a pain-in-my-rear, I am loving the white.
Now I have to make the next big decision, what fabric for the cushion?
I thought you could help me with that.
I am drooling over Caitlin Wilsons new fabric line and have my eye on a couple of the prints.
So let’s hear your vote!
I think I know my favorite but I would love to hear what you think.
Thanks 🙂
These are going to look awesome. I would have to say the cobalt hong kong or peacock scallop for sure.
I’ve had the same experience with this paint. Hate the drying time!! I love all of the fabrics, any of themw ould look amazing!!
My vote for the fabrics would be option 3 with the coral. Since the chairs are white I would go for something with more color in it. Good luck! Can’t wait to see how they turn out!

Wow! I love all of the fabrics. My definite favorite is the first blue fabric! I love that color blue with a crisp white! 🙂 The chair looks amazing already!
I love the white, did you use a paint sprayer or did you paint by hand? Either way, you have more patience than me 🙂 the chairs will look great! Also, I love all the fabrics, but if I have to vote it’s a tie between number 1 & 4. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Isn’t painting such a pain?! I am loving the cobalt hong kong!
I think I’d go for a pattern without a white ground–so the coral, for sure.
They’ll be super cute! Keep at it.
cobalt hong kong!
You need a paint sprayer. I would have thrown the chairs off the balcony at that point too. They are going to look amazing when they are done. I’m drooling over the Cobalt Hong Kong and the Peacock Scallop. I may need to get some of those, it is a stunning line of fabrics.
Love love #1 – but they’re all great!
No kids? That makes a difference. I need to reupholster 6 chairs and am struggling what to do because I don’t dare put fabric on there with a 4 year old constantly spilling!
The coral chevron would stand out, but I’m always a sucker for royal blue. I like the contrast between the fabric and the geometric lines of the chairs IF you chose the peacock scallop fabric. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
Ok, either #1 or #4 are my picks but I love blue. Love your chairs!
Great project, I think my fave is the Peacock Scallop. Good luck, can’t wait to see the finished project!
I think I like #2 the best. Hey, what if you first sprayed a coat of primmer then you could get away with one, maybe two, coats of the paint? That’s what we did :o)
I like the blue or the mint, can’t wait to see them all finished!
Yes I remember being very jealous of these. I think I would have painted them white as well. Personally I think the cobalt fabric would be fab!
Love the Hong Kong pattern, I think having the lineal lines of the fabric will play off great against the back of the chairs. Have fun with this project, I am sure it is one you will be happy to finish!! xx
Definitely the peacock scallop!
OMGoodness, how to pick just one fabric from all those great choices. I’m gonna vote for the Colbalt Hong Kong….I like the pattern and the colbalt colour with the white is both classic and fresh.
Happy painting.
I’m so in love with those chairs! AMAZING! 🙂
I personally love either the Coral Tall Chevron or the Colbalt Hong Kong. I’m sure they would all be perfect though.
I think the Peacock Scallop. Just the right amount of color to pop off the white and I love how the scallops offset the angular lines of the fretwork in the chair! Although, I think it is going to be fabulous no matter what you end up choosing. I envy your chairs!
I think white will be a perfect color for those chairs! I think my favorite print is the Peacock Scallop!
The first one is my favorite! It’s beautiful and make quite a statement!

I love #1, but all the options are amazing! I laughed when you mentioned throwing the chair off the balcony – I’ve been painting closet doors lately (white, which has required 3-4 coats!) and have wanted to just set them on fire a few times haha. Of course all the work will be more than worth it in the end, so hang in there 🙂
All of her fabric is fantastic! I love the coral chevron!
Your chairs are going to be fantastic!!! All of the fabric choices are gorgeous! I’d choose cobalt Hong Kong, I think…
Ooh, I love the last two. Maybe the seat cushion in the last fabric with piping in the pink?
Good luck with the chairs. My spray painting to do list is unmotivating. Garg!
Peacock Scallop…fo sho! 🙂
They are looking so great with the white paint! Good luck with the others! My vote is for #1…

I love the 1st one…it kinda matches the pattern of the chairs. Good luck with the spraying!
are you using a paint sprayer or painting by hand? I would throw them off the balcony too if you are doing it by hand. I have similar chairs in my dining room and I spray painted them white. Took about 2 cans per chair. (They were light nicotine-yellow to begin with.)
All of the fabrics are lovely, but one thought–are they going in your dining room? My kids destroyed the first trellis fabric I put on my chairs. I recovered them in a boring but wipeable beige vinyl. Just a thought. (Your daughter might be a touch neater than my banshees.)
cobalt hong kong – would look fabulous with your desk!
Also I would of sprayed the chairs as well, much easier!
Another vote for…#1!
It will be worth every minute of your trouble, they’re gorgeous!
Love the Cobalt Hong Kong and the Mint Fretwork 🙂 Can’t wait to see the end result!!
Hands down number 1. Gorgeous!!
#1 all the way 🙂
That is exactly what it looks like when I paint at my house- a drop cloth on the balcony! You can DIY anywhere!! Looking forward to the end result.
Mint or coral! How do you avoid getting spray paint on your railing?
you can do it! I vote for number 3! something else pink to match your piece of art!! 😀
I love them all…but 2 and 3 are my faves….and all will be fab on those white chairs!!!
I feel your pain on spraying the chairs…I started my breakfast chairs this summer, and stopped after one….5 cans of paint?!!?? It’s a good look going on in here, you can imagine! 🙂
The chair is looking fabulous! You will be so glad you suffered through! I like options 2 and 3 the best! Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Those chairs are awesome Danielle…and I can totally relate to the torture involved in painting them…I ended up spray painting the next time round with a spray gun..still a pain but cut down half the time.
I am loving the first fabric sample…The Cobalt Blue…you really cant go wrong with that colour against white…and its a versatile colour for all seasons.
Second choice…of course the Coral Tall Chevron…I am just loving the colour coral right now!
Look forward to seeing the end result lovely ; )
Coral!
I love the Cobalt King Kong.. Hang in there, I am the worst at finishing projects, but you can do it!
I’m loving the cobalt hong kong or coral chevron. I think both of those would look lovely either way.
I love the Cobalt Hong Kong. White and navy paired together is so crisp and classic!

Your chairs are going to look great! My vote is for #1 cobal hong kong 🙂
I love the Cobalt Hong Kong personally but I’m sure any of the options would look fabulous. Can’t wait to see what you go with.
xx
Those are going to look amazing! My vote is for the coral tall chevron! It will compliment your blue desk perfectly!! But I have to say I think they would all look great! I’m obsessed with her textile line! Have a great Thanksgiving!!
I’m loving #1 & #3 – can’t wait to see the finished product!!
i love them all. I love #2 but think the #1 would look so great on the chair!
Oh man, these are going to look great!! I love the Peacock scallop fabric. Good luck on coats 2 and 3 🙂
