I’ve Got Answers!

Yesterday I got flooded with questions and emails regarding the paint I used on my desk.
Instead of answering them all individually, I thought I would post the answers to all of the questions.
1. Did you brush, spray, or roll the paint?

I tried brushing and rolling but the paint is really thick so I opted for just brushing. It ended up being really easy and went quite quickly.
2. Can you see brush strokes?

NO! This is one of the perks of this incredible paint. You can see the brush strokes when you are painting it, but they go away as it dries.
3. Did u use a protective coating?
No, and I don’t see a need to. This paint is like plastic liquid, it is amazing.  The finish is super shiny and very hard. It is not sticky and I can’t even imagine it chipping.
4. Did you prime or sand before painting it?

No, the paint recommends lighting sanding really shining areas but no primer is needed. Yippee!
5. Do you have to wait 24 hours between coats?

Absolutely. Trust me, this was VERY hard for me. I like to start and finish as fast as possible. The recommended drying time is 24 hours and it is necessary if you want the paint to adhere properly.

6. What color is the paint?

It is Rustoleums Protective Enamel Gloss Royal Blue 7727.
This paint only comes in a handful of colors, but Jenny mentioned the possibility of mixing the colors to create the perfect shade, I think that is a great idea.
7. Does the paint stink?
Yes, it has a strong smell. I painted the desk outside on my deck and left it there for 3 days until the fumes wore off.

8. How shiny is it?

It is really hard to show in pictures but it is definitly a high gloss. You can even see the reflection of my computer and the hardware. I am obsessed with it!

9. How much was the paint?

This is the best part! I bought a quart for just under $9.00. I did three coats and used just over half of the can. It coats really well.
10. Would you use it again?
Yes, yes, yes! I am hoping to get my faux bamboo chairs painted this weekend!
Do you have anymore questions?

Love it…the color, the shine, everything. I’m just such a greenie and don’t go near that kind of paint because of the fumes, so instead I’m left with low voc paints that don’t shine as brilliantly sadly. Great job!

This is gorgeous! I also painted an old desk (hot pink) 2 yrs ago and then had a piece of glass cut to fit on the desktop to preserve the finish. It has worked perfectly!

It’s likes the heavens opened up and sent you down just to write this blog for me! JUST today my exchange student and I wrapped up a photo shoot in Old Money Dallas and ran into two high end estate sales. Since we got to the sales so late the man gave me a desk for free! Naturally I accepted it and then started having second thoughts about it on the drive home. How was I gng to paint it? What was I going to use? How long am I going to have to search the internet looking for half ass answers? Thank goodness i’m subbed to you on BlogLovin’ because you have OFFICIALLY made my life that much easier. I’m getting a sander and a bucket of this paint in white this weekend!

    Quick Q:
I am thinking of using this paint on a piece of furniture that is already painted. Do you think in this situaltion I should sand/strip it? Or do you think I could just add the enamel gloss on top?

    Katie,

I think you could paint right over it. I am no expert, but the paint clams to need no sanding. If there are pieces of paint chipping off, I might give it a little sand but I don’t really think you would need to otherwise. Send me a pic when you are done! I would love to see 🙂

After reading about your experience, I decided to paint my bathroom cabinet & mirror using this product! I choose Leather Brown and let me tell you.. it is luxe! Rich, dark chocolate with a high gloss. It is SO smooth. It looks so high end and a MAJOR improvement over the blonde laminate. Just 2 coats was all it needed. Thanks for sharing the details!

Woohoo, I would of never thought of buying this product if you didn’t post about it! I love high gloss, seems so Hollywood Regency to me. I am going to try this in white for my desk, thanks so much for the tip!

Hey! I just wanted to post a comment in case “katie jo” saw it … I stripped a pine cabinet yesterday and painted over the bare wood with the Rustoleum oil-based protective enamel, and I ended up with a lot of bubbling and cratering. 🙁 Some research told me that I should have either painted WITHOUT stripping first, or should have sealed the wood. Using this paint over completely bare, unprimed/unsealed wood doesn’t work. Don’t make the same mistake I did! Wish I had just painted over the original finish like you did, Danielle!
